How Prometheus gave a fire to men.txt

Na.                 Many years ago, there lived two brothers who were not like other men, nor like                         the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus.

They were the sons of one of the Titans who had fought against Zeus and been

sent in chains to the prison of the Lower World.

The name of the elder of these brothers was Prometheus which means

‘Forethought.’

Prometheus was always thinking of the future and making things ready for what might happen tomorrow, or next week, or next year, or even in a hundred years’ time.

Prometheus      I wonder how time will change our world as it passes...

I may have many wrinkles in a hundred years.

How can I keep my skin looking young and fresh, that is the question.

Epimetheus       Prometheus, you worry too much about the future.

Na.                 The younger was called Epimetheus which means ’Afterthought.’

Epimetheus       ’What did we have for dinner last night?’

‘Remember the promise you made to me last year?’

Na.                 Epimetheus was always so busy thinking of yesterday, or last year, or a hundred                 years ago,  that he never worried at all about  what might come to pass in the future.

Epimetheus       I will leave our worries of the future to you, brother.

Prometheus      But little brother, we must always ponder the future.

That is in our best interest.

Epimetheus       No, thanks.

Na.                 Prometheus did not want to live amongst the clouds on Mount Olympus. He was too busy for that.

Prome             I wonder what is happening below??

Why must I stay up here all the time?

I want to live my life to the fullest, and I cannot do so from among the clouds!

Na.                 While the gods were spending their time in idleness, drinking nectar and eating ambrosia,

he was planning how to make the world wiser and better than it had ever been before.

Prome             The gods, they have no interest in us. Or in humanity.

Na.                 So instead of living on Olympus, Prometheus went out amongst men to live with them and help them.

Prome             I will be the one to guide man!

This is a task I give myself.

Na.                And he quickly noticed that they were no longer happy as they  had been during the golden days when Kronos, the Titan, was

                      king.

Prome             I cannot believe that this is your dwelling...

인간1               Dear Prometheus...

We live in small, dark caves... it is dark and wet and humid...

It is a terrible thing to be living here.

인간2               Dear Prometheus...

We do not even have enough to eat!

In the spring and summer, we can pick fruit in the fields, but in the wintertime...

                      we have no food.

Prome             But hello? There are many animals roaming about...the lions, the cattle…

Why do you not catch and eat them?

인간1               Animals??

인간2               We cannot eat their flesh off the bone.

Prome             Ahh... that’s right. I forgot. They have no fire to cook with.

Na.                 He found them living in caves and in holes of the earth, shivering with the cold because there was no fire,

dying of  starvation, hunted by wild beasts and by one another—the most miserable of all living creatures.

Prome             Why is man the most pitiful creature of this world?

If they only had fire....sweet fire!

they could at least warm themselves and cook their food..

and after a while they could learn to make tools and build themselves houses.

인간2               Prometheus, please – please help us.

Prome             I will help you. I will bring you fire.

인간1               ’Fire’? What is this... ’fire’? Is it a kind of food?

Prome             No, it is not.

인간1               We would welcome any food... even ’fire.’

Prome             As I said, Fire is not food.

인간1/2            Prometheus... please help us!

Prome             Without fire, they are worse off than the beasts.

---------------------

Zeus                Prometheus. You do not belong here.

How dare you stand before me, the great Zeus.

Prome             Zeus, please…hear me out. I am here on behalf of man.

They are in need of your help.

Zeus                Me?? Help man? Why would I do so.

Prome             Zeus, if they only had fire... their lives would be so much better.

Zeus                What is this you ask?? FIRE??

Na.                 Prometheus went boldly to Zeus and begged him to give fire to the people,

so that so they might have a little comfort through the long, dreary months of winter.

Zeus                I will not give them fire!!

Prome             Please, almighty Zeus... please... the greatest almightiest god

Bestow benevolence upon man, with fire... to help them survive the cold winter.

Zeus                No no no!!

Not one spark will I share with them!

For if man had fire they might become strong and wise like us,

and after a while they would drive us out of our kingdom.

Prome             Never, Zeus, never. That would never happen. Are you kidding?

Zeus                Besides, fire is a dangerous tool and they are too poor and ignorant to be trusted with it.

It is better that we on Mount Olympus rule the world without threat so that all can be happy.

Prome             But Zeus, Zeus, Understand that

Humans are weak, they will never be a threat to

Mount Olympus. Please, Zeus... I beg you...

Zeus                No. Now get out of my sight.

Na.                 But Prometheus, he had set his heart on helping mankind, and he did not give up.

Epime              Brother... Do not pursue this any further.

Or you may have to bear the wrath of Zeus.

Prome             Epimetheus. If you only saw how humans were living...

You would agree with me, I need to bring them fire.

Epime              Please don’t! You are not a god!

Do not interfere in their rule over mankind.

Prometheus – Prometheus, where are you going??

Prome             I need to find a way, a way to get fire!

Na                  Prometheus thought long and hard about how he could get fire.

As he was walking by the seashore he found a tall stalk of

                      fennel.

Prome             What’s this? I can use this!!

Na.                 He broke it off and then saw that its hollow center was filled with a dry,

soft substance which would burn slowly and stay a light for a long time.

He carried the stalk with himas he began a long journey to the top of Mount Olympus.

Prome             ‘Mankind shall have fire, despite what Zeus has decided!!!’

Na.                 he said to himself... And with that thought,he snuck quietly into Zeus' domain and....

stole a spark from Zeus' own lightning bolt.

Na.                 Prometheus touched the end of the long reed to the spark, and the dry substance within

it caught on fire and burned slowly.

Prome             This is it! It’s working, it’s burning!

Now I just have to get this fire to the humans!

Prome             No one can see this!

No one must see that I have stolen fire!

Na.                 Prometheus hurried back to his own land, carrying with him the precious spark hidden in the hollow center of the plant.

인간1/2            Prometheus!! Prometheus, he has returned!!

인간1               But what is that you are holding??

인간2               It seems to be moving!! It is bright!

Prome             Stay still my friends. This. Is. Fire.

I have brought fire to you. Come closer, gather around.

You will feel a warmth, an unbelievable warmth from this small flame. Come, come.

Na.                 When he reached home, he called some of the shivering people from their caves and built a

fire for them, and showed them how to warm themselves by it and use it to cook their food.

================================================================================================================

인간1               Ouch! The fire has hurt me!

Prome             You must be careful. Do not touch this directly.

Fire can be used in many ways if you are careful,

인간2               I cannot believe it!

The fire has made this meat delicious to eat.

인간1               We can catch the wild animals for food and place them over fire to eat it when we are hungry!

인간2               And it’s so warm.... I feel a warmth like the sun...

                      Fire is good.

인간1               Three cheers for Prometheus!!

인간2               Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

Prome             Thank you! I did a good job. I’m so proud of myself. Now the winter will not be as harsh for you.

Na.                 Men and women gathered round the fire and were warm and happy, and thankful to Prometheus for the wonderful gift

which he had brought to them.

Na.                 One chilly winter evening, Zeus gazed down from Mount Olympus and noticed fires burning cheerfully at the hearths of men and women

in every village across the land.

Zeus                What! IS! THAT????

How do they have FIRE, HOW???

Na.                 It did not take him long to realize that Prometheus had disobeyed him and given fire to men.

Prome             Zeus, please... please... I beg for your forgiveness...

Zeus                Prometheus! I commanded that man shall NOT

have fire, yet you stole it from me!

You stole from me, for HUMANS????

Prome             No, Zeus, no. I did not steal fire from you,

I simply took a small flame...

Look at how happy they are, look at how merry...

With the gift of fire from you, Zeus,

they can be warm and fill their empty stomachs.

Zeus                You fool!

THAT is the problem! Now that they have no worries of food or warmth, they will spend their time thinking of ways to defy their gods!

Na.                 Zeus was very angry and ordered that Prometheus be chained to

the side of a mountain to suffer there for all eternity.

Prome             This is miserable. Chained for all time...

Is this the punishment for angering a god...

Na.                 Prometheus was not only chained to a boulder for eternity,

Zeus also punished him with an eagle who would come

every day to tear out and eat his liver.

                      Yet...

                      Yet,

Prome             I have no regrets... My decision was a good one.

I am happy to have helped humans live a better life...

Na.             Even amidst his terrible punishment, there Prometheus stayed, thinking of the future,

happy in the knowledge that he had given fire to men...
