S. Korea seeks to set 300 new int'l standards by 2023

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's government said Monday it plans to expand the number of international standards set by the country and beef up its industrial competitiveness.

During a conference held by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Energy said it plans to work closely with the private sector and implement policies that can strengthen the industrial standard sector.

"Through 2023, the government will actively support the expansion of new industries by suggesting 300 international standards," Vice Industry Minister Cheong Seung-il said, claiming the government will aim to bolster the private sectors' capabilities in terms of standardization.

The agency said South Korea plans to become what it calls a "first mover" in the global standardization sector, instead of remaining as a "fast follower."

Local companies that attended the meeting also echoed the view, adding that leading international standards is especially important in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. 

The companies asked for the government's support in fostering standards in the emerging industries, such as robots, as the country still lacks related infrastructure in the area.

산업통상자원부는 한국 기술표준원에 의해 열린 회의에서 민간 부문과 긴밀히 협력하고 산업표준 분야를 강화할 수 있는 정책을 시행할 계획이라고 말했습니다.

"2023년까지 정부는 300개의 국제 표준을 제안함으로써 새로운 산업의 확장을 적극적으로 지원할 것입니다,"라고 정승일 산업부 차관은 정부가 표준화 측면에서 민간 부문의 역량을 강화하는 것을 목표로 할 것이라고 주장하면서 말했습니다.

이 기관은 한국이 "fast follower"로 남는 것이 아니라, 세계 표준화 부문에서 "first mover"로 불리는 사람이 될 계획이라고 말했습니다."

회의에 참석한 국내 기업들도 제4차 산업혁명 시대에는 국제표준을 선도하는 것이 특히 중요하다고 덧붙였습니다. 

이들 회사들은 로봇과 같은 신흥 산업의 표준을 육성하기 위한 정부의 지원을 요청했습니다. 로봇과 같은 산업은 아직 관련 기반 시설이 부족하기 때문입니다.
