Q1. 흑인으로서 한국에서의 경험이 어땠나요?

잘 지내고 있는 것 같아요. 95% 정도는 좋은 사람들을 경험했어요.

나머지 5%는 꽤 나빠요. 흑인에 대한 안 좋은 인식 때문에 그래요.

사람들이 영화나 TV 를 보고 갖는 고정관념이 음.. 세상에 모든 흑인 또는 

한국에 있는 흑인들이 그럴 것이라고 생각하는 경향이 있어요. 

가끔 저를 쳐다보면서 안돼~ 넌 나쁜 사람이야 라는 시선을 받아요.

실제로 저는 좋은 사람인데 말이죠.

가끔 저는 미소와 함께 인사하며 그 벽을 깨려고 해요.

Q1. As a black man how has your experience in Korea been?

It’s been going.. um.. it’s going well I would say 95.. 95 percent of the time uhm.. 

I’ve experienced very nice people uhm..

The other 5 percent is pretty bad cuz um.. the stigma of a black person here, you know.

And the overall stereotypes of what they see throughout the movies or any TV shows

um.. tend to be like every black man in Korea or every black man in the world so..

Sometimes you get that.. that one eye looking at.. looking at me saying that 

no~ you’re a bad guy where in all actuality, I’m a nice person so..

Sometimes I try to break that barrier. Uh.. with a smile or a good greeting.

미국에서 자라는 거 좋았죠.
밖에서 많이 놀았어요. 스포츠도 많이 하고 몸도 더러워지고.
친구들과 가족들과 즐거운 시간을 보냈죠.

Growing up in America was great.

I played outside a lot, played a lot of sports, got dirty, and just enjoyed my time with my friends and my family.

제일 좋은 건 사실 여행이죠. 왜냐하면 어딜 가든지 항상 다르거든요.
비록 한 나라이지만 다양해요.

My favorite part of living in the States.
I think my favorite part is actually traveling around the country cause I think no matter where you go, it's always different.
Even though we're one country there's a lot.

서양문화와 비교해서, 서버(웨이터) 혹은 누군가는 너가 필요로 하는것을 시중들것입니다.

기본적으로 이 문화에서 그들은 당신이 "나한테 필요한 게 있어, 이리 와서 나한테 줘"라고 말할 때까지 당신을 무시할거에요.

그리고 당신이 말할 때까지 그들은 당신이 존재하지 않는 것처럼 행동할겁니다.

Q. What is something that surprised you about Korea?

so if you’re in restaurant or a bar and you need something,

you’re either going to hit a button or you’re gonna say Jogiyo.

You’re basically yelling at the person saying, “Hey, come here, help me.” 

versus  like Canada Western culture,the server or whoever is going to tend to your needs.

Basically in this culture they ignore you until you say “I need something from you,

come over here and give it to me.”

And until you say that, they act like you don’t exist.

Moon’s economic adviser quits over Southeast Asia remark

President Moon Jae in’s economic adviser Kim HyunChul resigned Tuesday, taking responsibility for controversy caused by his remarks a day 

earlier. 

At a forum hosted by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday, Kim said that retired Koreans should go to Southeast Asian countries, and that people referring to Korea as “hell Joseon” would realize that the state of this country outpaces those of the Southeast Asian countries. 

“Kim expressed his wishes to resign as soon as he came to work, and Moon accepted the resignation,” Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Kim Eui-kyeom said. 

According to Kim Euikyeom, Moon also expressed his regret that Kim wasquitting over an unexpected development, adding that the president 

considers Kim’s remarks to have been placing emphasis on the importance of the New Southern Policy. 

The New Southern Policy is Moon’s diplomatic drive to expand 

cooperation with Southeast Asian nations and India. Kim was serving as the chair of the special committee.

No. of Japanese visitors to S. Korea jumps more than 28% in 2018

The number of Japanese visitors to South Korea increased at the fastest rate in nine years in 2018. 

According to data from Statistics Korea, the number of Japanese visitors to the country spiked 28.1 percent on-year to more than 2.92 million in 2018. The rate of increase was the highest since 2009, when the figure rose 28.7 percent from the previous year. 

On the other hand, the rise in the number of South Korean visitors to Japan slowed from a year earlier, according to data from the Japanese National Tourism Organization. 

일본인 한국 방문자 수는 2018년 9년 만에 가장 빠른 속도로 증가했습니다. 

통계청의 자료에 따르면, 일본을 방문하는 일본인들의 수는 전년대비 28.1 퍼센트 증가하여

SsangYong Motor to renew Korando in 8 years in March

SsangYong Motor plans to renew its signature sport utility vehicle Korando in eight years next month, the company said Monday.

Unveiling a teaser image of the vehicle, the company said it has the most “flamboyant” digital interface, state-of-the-art tech features and a sophisticated body design. The vehicle, code-named C300, is a successor to the Korando C SUV upholding the legacy of the 37-year-old brand. Korando is the oldest SUV brand in South Korea.

The South Korean unit of Indian conglomerate Mahindra and Mahindra sought stability and refined style by lowering the height of the vehicle while making its width wider. 

“Taking the image of Hercules shooting an arrow as a motif, (the company) visualized the condensed but sophisticated and dynamic power and energy in the vehicle,” it said in a statement.

The price range of the new SUV has not been finalized, an official said. The company is mulling unveiling the vehicle during the Seoul Motor Show or at a separate event in the same month, he said.

S. Korea seeks to set 300 new int'l standards by 2023

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's government said Monday it plans to expand the number of international standards set by the country and beef up its industrial competitiveness.

During a conference held by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Energy said it plans to work closely with the private sector and implement policies that can strengthen the industrial standard sector.

"Through 2023, the government will actively support the expansion of new industries by suggesting 300 international standards," Vice Industry Minister Cheong Seung-il said, claiming the government will aim to bolster the private sectors' capabilities in terms of standardization.

The agency said South Korea plans to become what it calls a "first mover" in the global standardization sector, instead of remaining as a "fast follower."

Local companies that attended the meeting also echoed the view, adding that leading international standards is especially important in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. 

The companies asked for the government's support in fostering standards in the emerging industries, such as robots, as the country still lacks related infrastructure in the area.

S. Korea's LNG imports hit new high in 2018

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) reached an all-time high in 2018 amid a spike in purchases from the United States, industry data showed Monday.

The country's LNG imports totaled 44.04 million tons last year, up 17.3 percent from the prior year and a new record high, according to the data from industry sources and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA).

Qatar was South Korea's largest LNG import source, accounting for 32.4 percent of the total. Australia came next with 17.9 percent, followed by the U.S. with 10.6 percent and Oman with 9.7 percent.

In particular, LNG imports from America more than doubled in 2018 from a year earlier as South Korea sharply expanded shale gas purchases.

LNG imports from the U.S. came to 4.66 million tons last year, up a whopping 138 percent from the previous year.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, South Korea brought in 4.54 million tons of LNG from America in the first 10 months of last year, accounting for 23.6 percent of its exports at 19.24 million tons.

South Korea became the largest LNG importer from the U.S. in 2018, outstripping Mexico. In 2017, South Korea was the second-largest LNG importer from America, trailing Mexico.

Industry sources said a surge in imports from the U.S. will likely diversify South Korea's import sources and help stabilize LNG prices in Asia's No. 4 economy.

Another Korean victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery dies

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- Another South Korean woman coerced into sexual slavery for World War II Japanese soldiers died Monday, a civic group said, reducing the number of surviving victims to 24.

The victim, only identified by her surname Lee, died at 94, according to the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan.

She was kidnapped by Japanese troops at age 17 in 1942, when returning home after working at a factory. Lee was also forced to move to Manchuria where she was forced into sexual slavery, according to the group.

Her death leaves only 24 surviving victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery when Japan colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910-45. Initially, 238 women were on the list of government-registered former sex slaves.

Historians estimate that up to 200,000 women, mostly from Korea, were forced to work in front-line brothels for Japanese troops during World War II.

In late November, the South Korean government said it will shut down a 1 billion-yen (US$9 million) foundation on wartime sex slavery that was funded by Japan.

It was created in July 2016 to financially support Korean victims of Japan's sexual slavery as part of a controversial accord signed in 2015 by the government of former conservative President Park Geun-hye and Japan.

역사 학자들은 제 2 차 세계 대전 당시 한국인을 중심으로 약 20 만 명의 여성이 일본군을위한 최전선 사창가에서 일하도록 강요 당했다고 추정한다.

11 월 말 한국 정부는 일본이 자금을 지원 한 전시 성 노예에 대한 10 억엔 (9 백만 달러)으로 만든 재단을 폐쇄 할 것이라고 밝혔다.

전 보수당 대통령인 박근혜와 일본 정부가 2015 년에 서명 하여 논란이 많은 합의의 일부로  일본의 성 노예 희생자들을 재정적으로 지원하기 위해 2016 년 7 월에 창립 되었다.

                      The name of the elder of these brothers was Prometheus which means 

‘Forethought.’

                      Prometheus was always thinking of the future and making things ready for what might happen tomorrow, or next week, or next year, or even in a hundred years’ time.

Prometheus      I wonder how time will change our world as it passes...

                               I may have many wrinkles in a hundred years.

                               How can I keep my skin looking young and fresh, that is the question.

Epimetheus       Prometheus, you worry too much about the future.

Na.                 The younger was called Epimetheus which means ’Afterthought.’

Epimetheus       ’What did we have for dinner last night?’

                              ‘Remember the promise you made to me last year?’

Na.                 Epimetheus was always so busy thinking of yesterday, or last year, or a hundred                 years ago,  that he never worried at all about  what might come to pass in the future.

Epimetheus       I will leave our worries of the future to you, brother.

Prometheus      But little brother, we must always ponder the future.

                      That is in our best interest.

Epimetheus       No, thanks.

Na.                 Prometheus did not want to live amongst the clouds on Mount Olympus. He was too busy for that.

Prome             I wonder what is happening below??

                      Why must I stay up here all the time?

                      I want to live my life to the fullest, and I cannot do so from among the clouds!

Na.                 While the gods were spending their time in idleness, drinking nectar and eating ambrosia, 

                    he was planning how to make the world wiser and better than it had ever been before.

Prome             The gods, they have no interest in us. Or in humanity.

Na.                 So instead of living on Olympus, Prometheus went out amongst men to live with them and help them.

Prome             I will be the one to guide man!

                      This is a task I give myself.

Na.                And he quickly noticed that they were no longer happy as they  had been during the golden days when Kronos, the Titan, was

                      We live in small, dark caves... it is dark and wet and humid...

                      Bestow benevolence upon man, with fire... to help them survive the cold winter.

Zeus                No no no!!

                      Not one spark will I share with them!

                      For if man had fire they might become strong and wise like us,

                      and after a while they would drive us out of our kingdom.

Prome             Never, Zeus, never. That would never happen. Are you kidding?

Zeus                Besides, fire is a dangerous tool and they are too poor and ignorant to be trusted with it.

                      It is better that we on Mount Olympus rule the world without threat so that all can be happy.

Prome             But Zeus, Zeus, Understand that

Humans are weak, they will never be a threat to

                      Mount Olympus. Please, Zeus... I beg you...

Zeus                No. Now get out of my sight.

Na.                 But Prometheus, he had set his heart on helping mankind, and he did not give up.

Na.                 He broke it off and then saw that its hollow center was filled with a dry,

                    soft substance which would burn slowly and stay a light for a long time. 

                    He carried the stalk with himas he began a long journey to the top of Mount Olympus.

Prome             ‘Mankind shall have fire, despite what Zeus has decided!!!’

Na.                 he said to himself... And with that thought,he snuck quietly into Zeus' domain and....

                    stole a spark from Zeus' own lightning bolt.

Na.                 Prometheus touched the end of the long reed to the spark,and the dry substance within 

                    it caught on fire and burned slowly.

Prome             This is it! It’s working, it’s burning!

                      Now I just have to get this fire to the humans!

Prome             No one can see this!

                      No one must see that I have stolen fire!

Na.                 Prometheus hurried back to his own land, carrying with him the precious spark hidden in the hollow center of the plant.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with a top North Korean official in Washington Friday to finalize details of a second potential summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The meeting was held at the Dupont Circle Hotel, about 10 blocks north of the White House, where the North Korean delegation is staying. 

Kim Yong-chol, known as a close aide to the North Korean leader, arrived in the U.S. capital Thursday evening and is expected to stay through Saturday for talks with Pompeo as well as a possible meeting with Trump.

There is speculation the meetings could result in an announcement on the date and venue of the second summit.

Pompeo, Kim, and U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun posed for photographs before going into their meeting but did not respond to reporters' questions.

A second summit would seek to break an impasse in negotiations over North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Trump and Kim held their first meeting in Singapore in June and agreed to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in exchange for security guarantees for the regime.

The North insists the deal calls for sanctions relief and other corresponding U.S. measures for the denuclearization steps it has taken so far, including its dismantling of a nuclear testing site.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday that the North has yet to take "concrete steps" toward dismantling its nuclear weapons.

Reuters reported that U.S. and North Korean officials are also currently holding talks in Sweden, led by Biegun's counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.

It's unclear if and when Biegun will join the talks in Sweden.

The last time Kim Yong-chol and Pompeo were scheduled to meet, in New York in November, the State Department abruptly announced the meeting's postponement at a day's notice, reportedly at the North's request.

It's the first time that a North Korean government official has flown directly into the U.S. capital without a stopover in another U.S. city.

The last senior North Korean official to stay in Washington overnight was the late Vice Marshal Jo Myong-rok, who visited Washington in October 2000 and met with then U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The two countries fought each other in the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, and have no diplomatic relations with each other.

워싱턴, 1월 18일(요나프) ­ 마이크 폼포 미국 국무장관은 금요일 워싱턴에서 북한 고위 관계자를 만나 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 김정은 북한 노동당 위원장간의 제2차 정상회담의 구체적인 내용을 확정했다.

이 회의는 북한 대표단이 머물고 있는 백악관에서 북쪽으로 약 10블록 떨어진 두퐁 서클 호텔에서 열렸다. 

북한 지도자의 측근으로 알려진 김영철씨는 목요일 저녁 미국 수도에 도착해 폼페이와의 대화와 트럼프와의 회담 가능성을 위해 토요일 저녁까지 머무를 것으로 보인다.

2차 정상회담 날짜 및 장소에 대한 발표가 있을 것이라는 추측이 나돌고 있다.

폼포, 김, 스티븐 비에군 북한대표는 회담장에 들어가기 전 사진을 찍기 위해 포즈를 취했으나 기자들의 질문에 대답하지 않았다.

북한은 이 협정이 제재 완화와 핵 실험 장소의 해체를 포함한 지금까지 취한 비핵화 조치에 대한 미국의 다른 조치를 필요로 한다고 주장한다.

마이크 펜스 미국 부통령은 16일 북한은 아직 핵무기 해체를 위한 구체적인 조치를 취하지 않았다고 밝혔다.

로이터통신은 미국과 북한 당국자도 최손희 외무성 부상이 이끄는 스웨덴에서 회담을 갖고 있다고 보도했다.

비건이 스웨덴에서 열리는 회담에 참가할 것인지 그리고 언제 참가할 것인지는 불분명하다.

김용철과 폼페이오가 마지막으로 만날 예정이었던 11월 뉴욕에서 국무부는 북한의 요청에 따라 하루 전에 갑작스럽게 회담 연기를 발표했다.

북한 정부 당국자가 미국 내 다른 도시에 들리지 않고 미국 수도로 직항한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

북한 고위관리는 2000년 10월 워싱턴을 방문해 빌 클린턴 미국 대통령을 만난 고 조명록 차석대좌관이었다.

양국은 1950-53년 한국전쟁에서 서로 싸웠는데, 한국전쟁은 평화조약이 아니라 휴전협정으로 끝났고 외교관계가 없다.

S. Korea lagging behind Japan, China in EV battery competitiveness

SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korean battery makers are lagging behind their 

rivals in China and Japan in electric vehicle (EV) battery competitiveness, a local think tank said Thursday. 

Korean car battery companies, such as LG Chem Ltd. and Samsung SDI Co., have 

witnessed their combined share in the global battery market plunge to 11 percent in

 2018 from 30 percent in 2014, due mainly to a lack of captive buyers, the Korea 

Economic Research Institute (KERI) said in a statement. 

"Unlike their Korean rivals, Chinese power battery manufacturer Contemporary 

Amperex Technology Ltd. (CATL) and BYD Co. Ltd. are rapidly growing players in the 

car battery market helped by domestic demand. Panasonic Corp. has secured clients, such as U.S. electric car maker Tesla, Inc.," the statement said.

Currently, battery makers in the three countries meet 80 percent of the world's 

EV battery requirements. 

In Korea, there is no major manufacturer of all-electric vehicles. Hyundai Motor Group has generally been keen to develop hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles, 

although they make pure electric cars. 

KERI advised the government to purchase more EVs for the public sector, provide 

more subsidies to buyers of such green cars and beef up the country's charging 

infrastructure. 

The government said it is pushing to get 250,000 EVs to the public and private sectors 

by 2020, while increasing investments in charging stations in major cities.

"한국의 경쟁사와 달리 중국 전력 배터리 제조업체인 현대 암페어렉스 테크놀로지(CATL)와 BYD는 국내 수요에 힘입어 자동차 배터리 시장에서 급속도로 성장하고 있다. 파나소닉은 미국 전기차 업체 테슬라 등 고객사를 확보했다고 밝혔다.

현재 이 세 국가의 배터리 제조업체는 전 세계 EV 배터리 요구량의 80%를 충족시키고 있다. 

한국에는 전기자동차의 주요 제조사가 없다. 현대자동차그룹은 순수전기차를 만들지만 수소연료전지 전기차 개발에 열정적으로 임하고 있다. 

KERI는 정부가 공공부문을 위해 EV를 더 많이 구입하고, 그러한 녹색 자동차 구매자들에게 더 많은 보조금을 제공하고, 국가의 충전 인프라를 강화할 것을 권고했다. 

정부는 2020년까지 공공 및 민간 부문에 25만대의 EV를 공급하고 주요 도시의 충전소에 대한 투자를 늘리려고 추진하고 있다고 말했다.

Seoul extends review on businessmen's request to visit Kaesong 

complex

SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will extend its review to next week to decide whether to allow local businessmen's request to visit the inter-Korean industrial complex in the North's border town of Kaesong, the 

unification ministry said Wednesday.

Last week, around 180 business people who once operated plants at the 

industrial park requested state approval for their trip there Wednesday to

 check facilities they left behind when it was abruptly closed in 2016.

"We have verbally notified the Kaesong businessmen of our decision. 

Relevant measures will be made today or tomorrow to extend our review

," Baik Tae-hyun, the ministry's spokesperson, told a regular briefing.

Any trip by South Koreans to North Korea requires government approval 

and the North's consent, as the Koreas technically remain in a state of

Many Elderly Koreans Are Lonely

Around one in five elderly Koreans have little if any social contact, the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs said in a study.

Based on a survey of more than 10,000 people, it concluded that up to 1.54 

million of the country's estimated 7.38 million elderly people or 20.9 percent 

take part in no social activities, be it travel, study, hobby, social or political 

gatherings, volunteering or worship.

It often makes a drastic change from their previous working life when they 

suddenly find themselves without any social interaction.

Major factors were distant relations with their family or the death of spouses  and friends.

KIHASA's Kang Eun-na said, "State led measures are needed to prevent isolation of senior citizens from becoming a severe social problem."

The study found that the most socially inactive elderly tended to have little 

education and lived alone, with the threat of isolation rising the older the person got. Women have it tougher than men.

Even among those with no mental or physical difficulties, one in six said they have no social life.

Lee Sam-sik at Hanyang University said, "People over 65 dedicated their youth to work and children, so they often do not feel the need to engage in social activities which could help them to live life to the fullest."

Lack of social interaction, according to the study, raises the risk of depression and dementia and thus the potential for suicide or being found dead alone.

Many government institutions do try to help such people. The Ministry of Health and Welfare provides some home visits to the elderly in need while running an automated alarm system that informs the nearest help center in any emergencies.

Yet policy alone cannot help the isolated elderly. A voluntary worker said some elderly people refuse any help from volunteers and social workers and simply will not allow visits to their home.

Lee Ho-seon, a counselor who runs a help center for the elderly said, "The younger generation can get an idea of their future by seeing how the older generation lives, and by letting the elderly take a more active role in social activities, youngsters can look forward to a better future and live more positively when they themselves grow old."

연구에 따르면, 사회적 상호작용의 부족은 우울증과 치매의 위험,그리고 이로 인한 자살 또는 혼자 죽을 수 있는 가능성을 증가 시킬 수 있다고 합니다.
